INCLUSION 🤝 ACCEPTANCE Can you really have one INCLUSION 🤝 ACCEPTANCE

Can you really have one without the other? I’d love to hear your perspective.

We can invite and include individuals with disabilities to environments, events, etc. but if we expect them to mask their needs while doing so-that’s not acceptance (or inclusion, IMO).

This week, I was inspired by our adapted music teacher, who is truly THE most inclusive and accepting educator I’ve ever crossed paths with in my 13 years of education.

We had a grade-level musical performance and obviously, our kids were included. But I’ll be honest, I was nervous. Were they being invited, but expected to stand still for 30-40 minutes on the risers as hundreds of kids and adults watched them? Were they being invited, but expected to stay for every single song even if the environment became overwhelming or they advocated to be done before the last song? Were they being invited, but expected to show a “level zero” when it wasn’t “their part of the song”? The list goes on….

Instead, she set the example for true inclusion and acceptance. She thought of every single possible scenario and had a support in place for each of our kids. She never once expected them to mask their needs or themselves to fit HER idea of the performance, but instead provided them with an environment that supported their needs.

We have a LONG way to go with acceptance and inclusion, but these are the moments that give me hope as an educator.

I’ve been color-coding student supplies for YEAR I’ve been color-coding student supplies for YEARS and it’s a must-have in my classroom. Here’s why:

•when materials are found on the floor or in random areas of the room, staff know who they belong to
•subs can easily identify who essential supplies belong to when packing up, such as folders, communication devices, etc
•students can identify which belongings are theirs, within our classroom, if they are still emerging in recognizing their name
•helps with generalizing color recognition
•staff aren’t stressing to figure out if a student has their own chewy tube because it’s color-coded to “their” color

Do you color-code in your classroom?! I’d love to hear how it helps!
