student project: Valentine flower grams

·

a little about this project

During the month of February, our students sell, assemble, and deliver flower bouquets/arrangements to staff in our building. This project gives our students a fun and hands-on way to work on:

  • counting money (staff purchase the flower grams for other staff)
  • fine motor skills (hole-punching tags, threading tags, tying around flowers)
  • filling orders
  • following a visual
  • counting quantities
  • sorting by flower type
  • communication/social skills when delivering the flowers
  • navigating the building

the steps

  • Once you determine the details of your own Flower Grams, such as when orders are due and how much you’ll charge, send out an email to staff explaining the process. An example of the email we send to our staff can be found via google docs here.
    • In the past, we’ve sold them for $4/bouquet and each bouquet includes 4 blooms and 1 greenery stem, but I recommend you check pricing before communicating cost to staff.
  • Print tags for staff to fill out with their order. You can make your won tags or use the tags in my TPT product. Another option is to have staff fill out a google form and then students filled out the tags to work on copying/writing. Do whatever is most applicable for your students!
  • Have students count the money, count orders, and make a shopping list. We typically find the best prices on flowers at Sam’s Club.
  • Hole punch tags and add string. These hole punchers are great for students building fine motor skills.
  • we have found this tissue paper to be the most cost effective, but dollar tree also has cheap vases for a more elevated look.
  • Deliver the flower arrangements- we like to divide the bags by where they are located in the building.

we hope you can use some or all of this student project to make learning meaningful for you students while spreading some Valentine’s cheer!
